Those of you who have already pre-ordered should have received an e-mail and will have read about 'the great little extra', the exclusive picture disc above...which we hinted at in that last news item. Here's some detail from Genesis Publications...

We are glad to announce that, in addition to the leather-bound book and artist signed print included within the Deluxe boxed set, Genesis is also including a specially created record pressing. Here, for the first time together on a 7" vinyl single, are parts 1 and 2 of 'It's No Game' by David Bowie.

Originally released on the 1980 album Scary Monsters the tracks are personally selected for inclusion in this edition by David Bowie - presented on a picture disc bearing two portraits from his iconic "Heroes" photo sessions.

Exposure Musical To Feature Bowie Photo?

Fame, What's your name?

Possibly the vaguest headline I've ever written, however...Great full-page picture in the Spectrum section of the Sunday Times Magazine, accompanied by the text below...

Of course, Bowie fans worth their salt will know that the 'factual' information provided above isn't quite right: "David Bowie stares blankly into Michael Ochs’s lens on a TV chat show in 1974."

~ That's not a blank stare, it's a sweet smile
~ It's not Michael Ochs’s lens...Neal Preston took the picture
~ The TV chat show was in fact Good Morning America wherein David was interviewed by Rona Barrett for a live broadcast on ABC
~ It was actually February 1976, not 1974

Neal Preston took many great photos of David between 1973 and 1976...and possibly more beyond that I'm not aware of.

Though I've seen at least a dozen stills from this recording, I have to admit that this is one TV appearance I don't think I've ever seen...anybody out there have a tape of it?

Almost forgot, the reason the magazine reprinted this picture was to publicise the upcoming Exposure musical, which you can learn more about here.

Download Horrors' Suffragette City And Watch Video

You know my Suffragette City, Is outta sight...

Nicely-timed for the year of the 35th anniversary of the original David Bowie single release, (07.09.2011 NEWS: SUFFRAGETTE CITY 45 IS THIRTY FIVE AND IMMORTAL) The Horrors, on a seemingly ever-upward trajectory, have covered Suffragette City for the second series of Channel 4's On Track with SEAT.

The recording, which was completed in one take straight onto vinyl at London’s Metropolis Studios, is an enthusiastic and fairly faithful rendition of Bowie’s original 1972 version, albeit with one glaring omission.

The silly buggers obviously forgot to include that immortal line, (as mentioned in the original advert above) "Wham Bam, Thank You Ma'am!" ...at least, that's how it seems. Why else would you leave it out?

Anyway, you can view the video and download the audio of the recording from the On Track Facebook page here.

Above is the cover artwork for the release, which, while seemingly abstract, could easily be a cheap copy of a bit of Ziggy clobber fabric...appropriately enough.

Rswx Recognises Bowie's Genius For Dave Project

Soulwax calls my name, "Hi Dave"...

David Bowie must be among the very first to praise the work of Soulwax, (albeit their side project, 2manydjs) when he mentioned them in a piece in The Times about mash-ups back in 2004, after being smitten by As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2 the previous year. (04.26.2004 NEWS: DAVID TALKS TO THE TIMES ABOUT MASH-UPS)

Mash ups were a great appropriation idea just waiting to happen. I first heard of them when 2manydj's put out their album a year or so ago and have been following the evolution avidly ever since. Being a hybrid-maker off and on over the years, I'm very comfortable with the idea and have been the subject of quite a few pretty good mash-ups myself.

Visconti and I had an unintentionally Luddite fantasy in the seventies revolving around a plan to write songs in the style of several different artists, The Doors or Mark Bolan etc., and then record some backing tracks in the style of, say Hendrix or the Stones and then I would record the vocal tracks imitating Cliff, Lennon or the Supremes even (with slightly speeded up tape). Shame we never got on with it but you know how those rainy Tuesday afternoon brainstorms go. Nowhere, generally.

Soulwax have used bits of Bowie here and there over the years, most notably on Rebel Rebel (Soulwax Edit) on their 50,000,000 Soulwax Fans Can't Be Wrong album.

However, they've now decided to go the whole hog with a Bowie special they have created called Dave. Here's a bit from Radiosoulwax.com...

Tv To Produce Foc Plus Free Slow Burn Download

Uncage the colours...

Hotly-tipped (and deservedly so) London band, Films of Colour, have successfully grabbed the attention of much-loved, record-producing chap, Tony Visconti, with their version of David Bowie's Slow Burn...a track which Visconti had a hand and two ears in when it was recorded for the 2002 Heathen album.

Films of Colour’s version of Slow Burn came to Visconti’s attention earlier this year following the online buzz around the band’s single Capital/Persinette. After hearing Slow Burn, Visconti flew to London to see Films of Colour perform. He was blown away and is now lined up to work with them in the studio. Talking about the track and the band, he said:

"When I was given a batch of demos to consider working with Films Of Colour I was struck with how many catchy songs they had written. I was also impressed with the quality of their demos; that they were clever, creative lads was very apparent. But one song stuck out, sounding so familiar yet I didn't really recognise it until the second chorus.

I knew the song because I produced it with David Bowie for his 2002 Heathen album release. But Films of Colour had altered it so much they had clearly made it their own. I think Bowie is one of the most difficult artists to cover, since his versions of his own compositions seem to be the definitive versions. After I heard Films of Colour's version I was completely won over."

The track will enjoy a wider release on December 12th when it will be issued with one or two other tracks with the sleeve below...

Films of Colour were described by Fierce Panda/Label Fandango head honcho Simon Williams (who released the band’s debut single Actions) as the best band he’s signed since Radiohead and Coldplay. Media support has come from 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq who made them his Favourite New Band, The Guardian (New Band of the Day), The Independent’s Barometer of Cool along with continued national radio support from XFM, Absolute Radio and on Amazing Radio where they reached No 1 in the listener’s Chart .

One magical moment...

Pete McKee's Great Moments in Popular Music exhibition at SNAP Galleries that we told you about in August, (08.13.2011 NEWS: NEW McKEE BOWIE PAINTING AND EXHIBITION AT SNAP & 09.12.2010 NEWS: MARC RILEY PAINTS BOWIE FOR COVER VERSION EXHIBITION) ends today, as you may have already gathered from this e-mail notification.

Bowie In V&a British Design Exhibition Next Year

Battle For Britain...

I imagine we'll give you a reminder regarding this exhibition nearer the time as it's not due until March 2012.

It's another V&A project, (09.09.2011 NEWS: BOWIE TRACKS ON V&A POSTMODERNISM SOUNDTRACK) this time entitled British Design 1948-2012: Innovation in the Modern Age and it includes the following three Bowie pieces...

A Jaguar E-Type, a David Bowie album cover and the new London 2012 aquatics centre will all feature in a new exhibition dedicated to some of the classics of post-war British design.

A model of the Olympic venue, designed by award winning architect Zaha Hadid, will be part of the show at the Victoria and Albert Museum, in west London,

Other exhibits include the 1959 Morris Mini Minor, an Alexander McQueen evening gown, Laura Ashley textiles and Brian Duffy's original photograph for the cover of David Bowie's 1973 Aladdin Sane album showing the star with a lightning bolt painted across his face.

The museum's director, Professor Martin Roth, said: "As people around the world will be focusing on the UK in the summer of 2012 this is an ideal moment to showcase British innovation, taste and creativity. We are also delighted to be hosting a series of British themed displays across all the collections in the Museum to accompany the major spring exhibition."

Sonic Editions Exhibition At Rah Until End Of October

I keep a photograph...

You've no doubt seen a number of the ubiquitous Sonic Editions adverts for the sale of rock photographs over the past year or so...that's a full page Bowie one below from UNCUT's David Bowie Ultimate Music Guide. (09.01.2011 NEWS: TEN COPIES OF BOWIE UMG UP FOR GRABS)

Well now they have an exhibition at the Royal Albert Hall in London of the greatest artists of the last 50 years, which runs through to the end of the month.

I've not actually been to the thing myself. However, I'm going to stick my neck out and say there must be Bowie pictures on display...particularly considering the subject matter and how frequently Sonic Editions have used Bowie in their adverts.

If you do attend and there are no Bowie photographs, I'll eat the Royal Albert Hall.

Hey Blam,

Well we're on again...Ziggy is walking the plank one more time at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney on Friday 14th October. It's going to be bigger and far more raunchy than last years sold out Ziggy show.

We have a new promoter, a dynamic new cast, new material and of course fabulous new costumes, darling! Ha!

I've enlisted three highly unique vocalists to join me on stage for this outing....all three have absolutely amazing voices, all three are incredibly wild live performers. Unpredictable, dangerous and full of raunch.

I've added a sexy rock diva to the cast for this show in Christa Hughes, who is well known downunder. She hails from a very well known entertainment family and fronted a controversial, but highly successful band here called 'Machine Gun Felatio'. As well as doing her select Bowie faves, she'll join me for a duet on 'Under Pressure' [she can be Freddie].

Paul Capsis is a huge star in rock cabaret and is currently touring his one man show around Australia, he also starred in Rocky Horror and a few movies.

Steve Balbi and myself are the permanent Ziggy mainstays...both huge DB fans and I really think we both come close to channelling the true Bowie Spirit in our performance.

It's going to be one hell of a show. I think Bowie would be proud.

I've even reserved a seat for you on stage...you can keep me company! Don't worry about dressing up, I have a lovely leopard skin leotard for you to slip into.

Deluxe Version Of Speed Of Life Now Fully Subscribed

I was running at the Speed Of Life...

We've had a couple of bits on these pages regarding the forthcoming book of Sukita's Bowie photographs, Speed Of Life, since March. (03.05.2011 NEWS: GENESIS PUBLICATIONS PRESENTS SUKITA'S BOWIE PHOTOGRAPHS & 06.08.2011 NEWS: SUKITA CHECKS SPEED OF LIFE PROOFS AT GENESIS)

Subscribers to the Genesis Publications newsletter service will have received this e-mail on September 27th inviting them to pre-order Speed Of Life from a hidden microsite.

That was followed on the 29th by this e-mail declaring that the Deluxe edition of Speed Of Life had been online for a mere 48 hours, yet more than half the 350 copies had already been sold.

This news obviously led to a bit of panic buying as the very next day, the chaps at Genesis e-mailed me to say that the Deluxe edition was now completely sold out!

News of the signed Collector Edition (1650 copies) will follow next month, along with information regarding a great little extra which we can't tell you about just yet as details are yet to be finalised.

Speed Of Life will see the publication of over 350 images mutually selected by David Bowie and Masayoshi Sukita of which over 80% will be seen for the first time...many from sessions we didn't even know had taken place.

Both authors have signed the edition and written captions for images that hold a particular significance to them.

The first Deluxe copies will ship worldwide in January 2012.

Shatner's Space Oddity Cleared For Take Off

5, 4, 3, 2, 1, LIFT OFF...

We first warned you...I mean told you...about this release back in April. (04.15.2011 NEWS: WILLIAM SHATNER IS SEARCHING FOR MAJOR TOM)

Seeking Major Tom is a kind of travelogue of the epic journey that William Shatner has undertaken in his attempt to track down the elusive Major Tom, via the medium of the space-themed cover version.

Out on October 11th in the USA, it looks like the rest of the world will have to wait until November 7th for their chance to endure the 2CD and 3LP vinyl physical format of the album.

However, don't despair, you can hear it way before that outside of the US, as the digital version is released worldwide on the 11th too.

Ziggy Stardust Spotted In Small French Town

But I have not been to Honfleur town...

Many thanks to BowieNetter Eric of France who has been in touch with details of the current promotional drive by French radio station Ouï FM.

Apparently the station was, until now, only available in Paris. Now they will broadcast almost all over France, and this campaign advertises that fact by utilising the Sleeveface concept.

I bet the Honfleurais haven't felt so Rock 'n Roll since the days of the école de Honfleur when the likes of Claude Monet made such an impression. (Pun, obviously intended.)

Acoustic Heroes Due On Bridge School Benefit Dvd

Hey man, my Bridge School days insane... ***

I'm sure you're all aware of the two very memorable acoustic shows David Bowie performed for Neil Young's Bridge School on October 19th/20th 1996.

He played an early evening set on the 19th and an afternoon one on the 20th with Reeves Gabrels and Gail Ann Dorsey for musical company.

The only official release from the two sets was "Heroes" (from the 20th) which appeared on The Bridge School Concerts Vol. 1 CD released the following year.

Well now the same performance can be seen as well as heard as it appears on the upcoming The Bridge School Concerts 25th Anniversary Edition 3 disc DVD set.

Mick Rock has announced on his newly-revamped site that Life on Mars Revisited, which we told you about back in June, (06.10.2011 NEWS: LIFE ON MARS REVISITED INSTALLATION PREMIERS IN PARIS & 06.17.2011 NEWS: LIFE ON MARS REVISITED MORE DETAILS FROM PARIS) will be shown both days at a two day event in New York.

The Creators Project will return to New York on October 15th/16th by transforming the DUMBO neighbourhood of Brooklyn into a colossal two-day arts and technology festival.

Exclusive - Bowie Brixton Ten Pound Bank Note Revealed

London boy, oh London boy, Your ten pound note is our pride and joy...

Despite declarations of a non-story from the occasional Doubting Thomas, we can at last reveal, exclusively on DavidBowie.com, the latest Brixton Pound denominations, including the Bowie ten pound note that we first told you about back in July. (07.25.2011 NEWS: BOWIE BRIXTON BANK NOTE DUE SEPTEMBER)

Though originally mooted for inclusion on the first issue of Brixton's very own paper currency in 2009, we are proud to be able to announce that David Bowie joins three other heroes of Brixton in an unveiling at ELECTRIC in Brixton tonight.

As you can see from the specimen below, the iconic and instantly recognisable Aladdin Sane cover shot has been used for the B£10 note.

Here follows the four latest additions that will be announced in Brixton this evening...

~ B£1: Lenford Kwesi Garrison, academic, community activist and co-founder of the Black Cultural Archives (1943-2003)
~ B£5: Luol Deng, professional basketball player for Great Britain National Basketball team at the London 2012 Olympics and the National Basketball Association's Chicago Bulls (born 1985)
~ B£10: David Bowie musician, actor and record producer. The Bowie family lived at 40 Stansfield Road, Brixton from 1947-1953 (born 1947)
~ B£20: Violette Szabo, GC, MBE, Second World War British secret agent. Born in Paris, she moved to London with her family and attended school in Brixton and later worked in the local Bon Marche department store. Violette was involved in a number of dangerous missions in France during the war as depicted in the 1958 film Carve Her Name With Pride. She paid the ultimate price for her heroism, being executed after suffering torture at the hands of the Gestapo, though never revealed any secrets. Violette was the second woman to be awarded the George Cross bestowed posthumously on 17 December 1946 (1921-1945)
