Never here, never seen...
Here's the third and final lot of my unpublished Riverside shots...Unless you demand otherwise of course.
I struggled hard to take these pictures...
As promised yesterday, here's another lot of my unpublished Riverside shots...Stay tuned for more tomorrow. Hope you like 'em.
It was a day in that blue month September...
As I post this, it is exactly a year since David Bowie took to the stage at the Riverside Studios in London's Hammersmith to present his Reality album.
Despite playing to a small audience of fans and friends at the actual venue, many more would witness the event via a live feed to cinemas around the globe... not to mention later broadcasts and the fact that the Reality section of the show became available on disc.
Well, I'm sure you've all seen a recording of the show by now, even if you weren't actually present on the day. But, you won't have seen these unpublished pictures I present here in celebration of the event, as I haven't posted them before.
Neither will you have seen the pictures I'll be posting over the next couple of days from that beautiful night exactly one year ago. Enjoy!
You never know you might find it here...
I noticed a recent debate on the MBs regarding the origin of the picture that
Rexy used the image to advertise three shows back in January and I managed to get a handful of these beauties signed by both Rex Ray and David Bowie himself.
Being the photographer, (and much to my embarrassment) I was persuaded to stick my moniker on the things too. But don't worry, winners of this competition can choose to have a print with or without my scribble, but still complete with Rex Ray's and DB's signature.
Anyway, we have five of these highly-collectable prints (one signed by DB went in a
When and where was the shot above taken? You need be no more specific than the country and the date.
Send your answer to me at TotalBlamBlam@davidbowie.com with a subject line of "Signed Reality Tour Print". Usual rules apply: You must send from your BowieNet account or at least provide your BowieNet username. Only one entry per account name.
The competition is open until midnight UK time on Friday September 17th and the five names that The Random Generator (TRG?) spits out will be announced the next day. As ever, the best of luck to each and every single one of you!
You win...
This was a pretty easy one wasn't it? A lot of BowieNetters entered and not many gave wrong answers. So, first up, here are those answers:
Q1. David himself created the painting that appears on the cover of 1. Outside. What is the name of that painting?
A1 Head of DB and The Dhead - Outside were both acceptable answers for this one. Even Head oof DB was allowed. (That last one will make perfect sense to a few of you!)
Q2. A track was released ahead of Earthling that hinted at the new direction. It was initially an internet only release, but was later issued as a legitimate 3-track 12" vinyl and CD single. What was that track?
A2 Telling Lies
Q3. Many of the songs that ended up on 'hours...' started life for a different project altogether. What was that project?
A3 The Eidos Interactive computer game: Omikron: The Nomad Soul
The five BowieNetters who got all three questions right and were lucky enough to be picked from a huge bucket of correct answers by The Random Generator, are listed below:
moss
edji1
voyage
kimbaruss
fidelio
If you're one of the above, please send me your real name and address and we''ll get these beauties out to you as soon as possible. Well done folx. That's all.
You asked for the latest total...

As you can see, sandyscandy is taking this one very seriously indeed. She certainly know's about being in the right place at the right time, picking up 900 points in one evening!
sandyscandy now needs just 205 points for an original signed item of Bowie clothing... and there are more than that still out there
Sorry about the delay in posting the prize list, I have more to scan than I realised. I'll PM you when it's live zig! };-)
Wonder: "Hey Jagger, what does this Ziggy Bowie dude look like?"
Dylan: "Different each time I look, Stevie. Looked like me once!"
Bowie: "Hi, Robert Zimmerman, I wrote a song for you."
Cobain: "DB... Didn't you write that Lulu song? I like that one a lot."
I wrote a song for you...
The current edition of Q magazine (October 2004) has a special on 'The Greatest Songwriters Of All Time. Needless to say DB is among the twenty chosen and he's represented on the cover-mounted CD by Neil Hannon & Yann Tiersen's brave attempt at Life On Mars?.
Here's a bit of what Moby has to say in the half-page Bowie feature inside the mag:
"The thing that always struck me is that he sings from the perspective of an older man even when he was very young. He's always been a wistful observer, and that's why his best songs are ones laden with pathos and despair."
You can read more regarding this edition at the Q website, which can be reached by clicking on David's eye-patch in the above detail from the Q fold-out montage that graces the cover of this edition.
Come together, party...
As regular visitors to the MBs will already know, BowieNetter RogInLA has hit upon the excellent idea of an International Reality DVD Viewing Party Day. He posted details of his simple but effective plan on the MBs a couple of weeks ago and it really seems to have taken off.
The idea is that BowieNetters from around the globe will get together on the first Saturday after the DVD's release to view the film with like-minded people while making the day a bit of an event at the same time. (I'm praying they don't shift that release date!)
I have to point out that, as good an idea as it is, this isn't a BowieNet organised event and you'd be better off learning the details from RogInLA's original post which you can reach by clicking on the image above.
That rock 'n' roll lady...
For those of you that haven't already chanced upon it, Gail Ann Dorsey's beautifully-designed official site has now been updated.
The site now features all the things you'd hope for, such as news, biography, show info, discography, GAD's personal journal and all sorts of other goodies, including a photo section with some great live shots from some of our very own BowieNetters such as nancyh and tvqueenbitch.
Click on Gail to take a closer look.

Looking For Walter...
As promised in my original piece, (08/07/04 NEWS: MORE BOWIE DOG SESSION PLUS THE IMMORTAL REVEALED) above are a couple of covers of The Immortal that I've dusted off for your viewing pleasure.
On the left is the Warhol-illustrated UK paperback and on the right, in it's full colour glory, is the original UK first edition hardback, as pictured at the feet of DB in aforementioned Terry O'Neil photo shoot.
Where else will you find such trainspottery detail? I need to get out more!
I'll say "Don't ask me..."
Even though they're not due in the shops for another month (September 27th) those generous sorts at Sony have given us five sets of the beauties above for a competition here on BowieNet.
And I have to say I think these are pretty cool items... well, I don't have to say it, I truly believe it. The double discs each come presented as beautifully-made glossy hardback edition books and really are quite special... and that's before we even mention the music!
You may remember from my last news piece regarding these releases, (06.22.04 NEWS: LIMITED EDITION SONY DBL DISCS DUE FOR SEPTEMBER) that each of the bonus discs are jam-packed with relevant b-sides, rare and hard-to-find tracks and previously-unreleased mixes.
Check out that original news piece for the bonus disc tracklisting, which I'm proud to say I had some considerable input in compiling... so it's good to see the positive response towards these reissues.
As ever, you obviously have a choice whether you buy these or not. But, at the mid-price that they are retailing at and with 44 bonus tracks across all three titles, I don't think anybody but the most miserable could deny they are excellent value for money.
Anyway, five BowieNetters are about to get even better VFM when they each win a set of all three for free!
All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning one of the five sets is answer these three very easy questions relevant to each album.
1. David himself created the painting that appears on the cover of 1. Outside. What is the name of that painting?
2. A track was released ahead of Earthling that hinted at the new direction. It was initially an internet only release, but was later issued as a legitimate 3-track 12" vinyl and CD single. What was that track?
3. Many of the songs that ended up on 'hours...' started life for a different project altogether. What was that project?
There ya go...easy peasy! Send your three answers to me at TotalBlamBlam@davidbowie.com with a subject line of "Sony reissues".
Usual rules apply: You must send from your BowieNet account or at least provide your BowieNet username. Only one entry per account name. Competition ends at midnight UK time next Saturday and winners will be announced the following Monday.
Don't forget there will be a limited edition of 2,000 numbered slipcase sets of the three albums together, also available at your local CD emporium on September 27th.
I lost God in a New York minute...
BowieNetter jungtheforeman pointed me in the direction of this one with the story that his daughter: "came home from New York Minute, the new Mary-Kate & Ashley movie, laughing herself silly about the version of Suffragette City performed by "Wakefield featuring Mary-Kate Olsen" at the end of the film."
Richard, aka jung, didn't make it clear whether he accompanied his daughter to see the film or not, or indeed why she found the rendition quite so amusing. But, no matter, you can get a taste of this particular version of the Bowie classic by clicking on the image above.
Looking For Water...
Upcoming comedy,
You can view an online trailer from the film that includes snippets from both of the Bowie songs, Queen Bitch and Starman, by clicking on the image above.
And speaking of Bowie songs on film soundtracks...
A Better Future...
Nineteen years later and after months of rumours and speculation, Warner Vision International has at last confirmed the release date and content breakdown of the forthcoming Live Aid 4-DVD set, now scheduled for a November release.
Here's a bit from Warner Music International:
Warner Vision International is proud to announce that the biggest concert in Rock n' Roll history, Live Aid, will be released on DVD world-wide on November 1st, 2004. The unforgettable global event, staged in London and Philadelphia on Saturday 13, July 1985, was watched on television by over 1.5 billion people around the world. These concerts led to pledged donations and royalties of over $140 million towards the devastating famine in Africa.
Billed as The Greatest Show on Earth, Live Aid was described by the world's media as 'The Global Jukebox', 'The Day Rock and Roll Changed the World' and 'The greatest live show ever'.
Live Aid was cited as the second most memorable event in two generations and was recently defined, in a consumer poll, as the single greatest moment in the 50-year history of rock 'n' roll, beating not only the launch of MTV and Elvis' first record but also topping the poll ahead of the seminal festival of the 60's, Woodstock.
Live Aid, the greatest artists playing the greatest music for the world's poorest people and changing the global political agenda forever.
Live Aid was uniquely staged simultaneously on two continents and features an unbelievable line up of major Rock & Pop acts that took to the stage in July 1985 at London's Wembley and Philadelphia's JFK Stadiums.
Even today, after almost 20 years, the line up of stars put together by Bob Geldof in a matter of months remains both remarkable and unsurpassed. It is a who's who of contemporary music; united in their unequivocal support for Live Aid to prevent mass death for starving people.
The extraordinary line-up includes: U2, Sting, David Bowie, Elton John, George Michael, The Who, Madonna, Queen, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, Duran Duran, Neil Young, Ozzy Osbourne & Black Sabbath, Spandau Ballet, Dire Straits, Paul Weller, Sade, Paul Young, Adam Ant, The Boomtown Rats, The Cars, Bryan Ferry, Bryan Adams, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Beach Boys, Judas Priest, The Style Council, Simple Minds, Thompson Twins, Nile Rodgers, Hall & Oates, Status Quo, The Pretenders, Elvis Costello, Howard Jones, Teddy Pendergrass, Alison Moyet and Kenny Logins.
Since that great day this historic concert footage has remained locked away and the announcement of its imminent DVD release is therefore indeed momentous. Unscrupulous bootleggers have tried to sell the concert on the black market but have been shut down and prosecuted on a number of occasions.
This has forced the Band Aid Trust to seek permission from all the artists to be included in the four-disc Live Aid set, an eventuality that was never anticipated at the time of Live Aid.
Now in time for the 20th anniversary of Live Aid and after 19 years in the vaults, Warner Vision International will release those unforgettable performances on a Live Aid, 4 DVD package out on 1st November.
Currently in production with the master videotapes and over 10 hours of performances the DVD will be superbly presented and re-mastered in multi-channel surround sound and stereo audio options. Within the set additional gems include the "Food, Trucks & Rock 'n' Roll" documentary (sub-titled in 8 languages) and inspirational Live Aid performances from other parts of the globe.
Bob Geldof had this to say: "Twenty years ago they not only played 'real good for free' they took an issue that was nowhere on the agenda of the political world and placed it at the very top. They also kept, directly or indirectly, millions of people alive and in so doing they reminded 1.5 billion people that individuals are not powerless in the face of monstrous human tragedy. By buying the Live Aid DVD that day continues far off into some distant but hopefully better future for all those people in whose name those great artists played."
Since the concert the Band Aid Trust in the UK alone has raised over $50 million and continues to operate in famine affected countries in Africa.
BowieNetters will remember David's performance included TVC15, Rebel Rebel, Modern Love and "Heroes", all to be included in this set, as is every other performance apart from Led Zeppelin's which the band were unhappy to include. There seems to be something about being an ex-Yardbird that ensures ego triumphs over rock history. Whatever happened to The Jean Genie/Love Me Do and Round And Round on Ziggy Stardust The Motion Picture. Grrrrr.
Anyway, Bowie fans will be pleased to learn that the Band Aid UK Finale of Do They Know It?s Christmas? and the exclusive Live Aid Bowie & Jagger Dancing In The Streets video are also included.
Live Aid is currently scheduled to hit the shops on November 8th. You can view the complete breakdown of the 4-disc set over at
