The stardust trail, Leading back to you...
You all know that David has no less than three covers on 'Heathen', The Pixies' 'Cactus', Neil Young's 'I've Been Waiting For You' and a truly magnificent version of The Legendary Stardust Cowboy's 'I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship'.
David has dropped the name of 'The Ledge' to anyone who cared to listen since the days when The Ledge's slogan was "A legend in his own time...No other time would have him." But, it's taken David over thirty years to record his tribute to Norman Carl Odam, (The Ledge's real name) and below he explains how he finally got round to recording a Legendary Stardust Cowboy tune:
"The third (cover on 'Heathen') is a song by my one time muse The Legendary Stardust Cowboy. He was a stablemate of mine on Mercury records in the late 60's and I chewed off the last part of his name for Ziggy, of course. When I read on his site that he thought that because I'd borrowed his name that, at least I should sing one of his songs I got guilty and wanted to make amends immediately. So I covered one of his best songs, 'I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spaceship' although he sings Spacecraft on the record."
So now you know. I do hope to do a page on The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, including a full discography, as there seems to be a general lack of an accurate online record of The Ledge's erratic career. We'll leave you with the lyrics to 'I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship' and a great quote from when The Ledge was asked about his favourite interests:
"The Old West and Space Exploration...Everything in-between is all garbage, and I'm not interested!"

I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship (Cowboy)
I took a trip on a gemini spacecraft
And I thought about you
I passed through the shadow of Jupiter
And I thought about you
I shot my spacegun
And boy, I really felt blue
Two or three flying saucers
Parked under the stars
The winding stream
Moon shining down
On some little town
And with each beam
The same old dream
I took a trip on a gemini spacecraft
And I thought about you
I shot my spacegun
And I thought about you
I pulled down my sun visor
Boy, I really felt blue
You jumped into your Gemini
I jumped into mine
We'll orbit the moon
For just one time
Tomorrow night
Tomorrow night
Will you hold hands
With me in the moonlight
I took a trip in a gemini spacecraft
And I thought about you
I shot my spacegun
And I thought about you
I took a walk in space
Boy, I really felt blue
Well, I peeked through the crack
And I looked way back
The stardust trail
Leading back to you
What did I do
What could I do
What did I do
Well??
I thought about you

In today's instalment, David recalls the breathtaking beauty of the studio views, and who he recommended to Natalie Merchant when she asked him if he knew any singers who could "holler and wail really well."

But if you pray...
Anyway, to celebrate the arrival of 'Loving The Alien' in the Dance Top Ten, we have five copies of the very collectable promotional 12", and five copies of the regular CD to give away to ten lucky BowieNetters. Firstly decide whether you want the promo 12" or the CD (you can only enter the competition for one or the other) and then answer the following question:
Who, with David Bowie, co-directed the original video for 'Loving The Alien'?
Send your answer to me at TotalBlamBlam@DavidBowie.com with a subject line of "12 inch Promo" or "Regular CD". Entries must come from a BowieNet e-mail account, and remember you must ask for either 12" Promo or Regular CD...double entries will be disqualified. We will announce the winners in approximately one month from now. Good luck!

Leading us on and on and on...
By all accounts (and there have been many), David Bowie stole the show at last night's Tribeca Film Festival show at Battery Park. Looking devilishly sexy in red and brown, our man left a big impression on the BowieNetters who mailed me with their reports, and everybody was blown away by new additions to the band, Gerry Leonard and Catherine Russell.
As David told us yesterday, the set consisted of five songs, 'China Girl', 'Slow Burn', 'Afraid', 'Lets Dance' and 'I'm Afraid Of Americans'...but I wasn't there to witness it, so I'll leave it to two BowieNetters who were. The winning contributors are EoS and BreakingGlass (happy belated birthday H2), who have both earned themselves a signed promotional 'Heathen' poster. Thanx to everybody who did send in a review, sorry we can't post them all, but I do think you should still post them on the MBs anyway.
Those of us that missed last night's show may still get to see some of David's performance as part of a documentary to be broadcast on May 24th on MTV in the USA. Anyway, over to EoS and BreakingGlass...Ladies first (Cries of "she's no lady", etc!)

Ok not too good at these things as it all becomes a blur after I leave but here goes.
David opened with China Girl, the band sounded amazing, absolutely love the addition of Gerry Leonard (but then I am a huge Spooky Ghost fan). David then went into a wonderful version of Slow Burn, much more guitar than is on the radio edit and it sounded beautiful. His voice was really strong and absolutely soared through the high notes with ease. Then came Afraid which totally rocked, if I wasn't waiting with bated breath for Heathen before this I am now camping out on the doorstep of Rebel Rebel to get it as soon as it is released!
Let's Dance was next, the new version with the slow sexy start, with Slick on acoustic guitar, heaven! This song really showcased Gerry. Last but not least was I'm Afraid of Americans, which as always was a real winner. The crowd were having a blast.
Now I will address what is maybe the most important thing, LOL. What did David wear, how did he look??? Can you say stunning? His hair was hanging in his eyes and he had on a red bomber type shirt or jacket, hard to tell from where I was standing, could have been leather but not sure. Reminded me a lot of the look from the Heroes era. Really gorgeous.
So there you have it, he looked and more importantly sounded fantastic, and I am counting the days to Roseland to see more. Thanks for a great night David and look forward to many more this year, you made a bunch of Bowienetters very happy tonight.
H2

David looked FAB!!! Ok? I know that's what you wanted to hear first, so I just had to get that in up front.
After a great bit of Sailor, introducing himself to the audience as our neighbor, in need of a bit of sugar and suggesting we stop by for tea, the band kicked in and Sailor became pure 100 per cent Bowie. China Girl started the set, in the hard-boiled, guitar-blastin style. Slow Burn followed - Slick blazing away, and Bowie's voice a thing of utter beauty (yer gonna love this one live, kids!). Afraid came next, complete with Plati pulling out the mini-strat!
Now up to this point, Gerry Leonard (in a pale-blue suit - perfect lol), was either not mixed up far enough, or was simply adding voltage to the rhythm chords. I absolutely love this guy, but started to wonder Slick would be too much for him to break thru. Silly me. Let's dance (slow intro version) followed, and Gerry was brilliant - adding his wonderful atmospherics throughout. Sterling's break in it was amazing, and then Gerry did a trademark 'spooky' solo til Slick lit it up. We're talking truly great stuff here.
I'm Afraid of Americans closed the set, again showing how potent the Slick/Leonard pairing is. Gail was kickin some serious ass, as always. Plati is the best damn rhythm guitarist I've heard in years, and Garson adds such a twisted elegance. Thought the 2000 band was good? Well wait'll ya hear this one!
But the best part was seeing and hearing all this incredible music in the company of such wonderful friends - and I've got Sailor to thank for that (and Helen2, who slipped me a 20 for saying it).
Bring on Roseland!
XO's
EoS

Early Performances : Metro : Recent
A recent edition of the UK commuter magazine 'Metro' carried this snippet about David's early career. "David Bowie's earliest known 'performance' was in the early 1950's. He went Carol singing in Bromley, Kent, with a classmate from Raglan Primary School and collected £2/2s for Bromley Blind Club. The young David... later sang three Lonnie Donegan songs at the 18th Bromley Scout troop's annual camp, playing a single-stringed bass he made from a tea chest and broom handle." Spotted by SusanS, this snippet has also inspired our cartoonist BowieNetter, Ysengrin, as you can see. Click on the picture for a larger version. (SusanS)

Bobby Conn : NME : 05/04/02
Bobby Conn, who will be appearing at David Bowie's Meltdown Festival on Friday 28th June, was afforded a full page spread in NME last week. He has also featured at the NME.com 'ON' microsite which aims to showcase 'tomorrow's stars today'. They said "Chicagoan Bobby Conn?s most recent album, ?The Golden Age?, filters the maddest excesses of ?70s rock, glam and disco through the mind of a natural punk, and uses this unusual musical backdrop as a springboard for a brilliant, personal odyssey. Soon British audiences will be able to witness this dizzy rebellion first-hand when Bobby plays these shores - but expect the unexpected." Check out Bobby's official page, here, and you can also take a look at this article from 'This Is London' which reviews a show in February of this year. Intriguing!
Defining his generation : The Guardian: 05/03/02
In an article discussing how British music continues to conquer the globe, David is namechecked as one of a handful of artists who were the defining voices for their respective generations. They say: "British music is the most innovative, the most revolutionary and the most in tune with the feelings of global youth. From the Beatles through David Bowie, the Sex Pistols and the Stone Roses to Oasis, the defining voice of each new generation across the world has been British."
Interview : Peter Frampton Biography : 05/23/02
If you missed David's interview last year, for a TV biography on Peter Frampton (05/17/01 NEWS: FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE ON A&E (BUT NOT TONIGHT!), and you are in the USA, you have another chance to see it. It airs on the Biography channel, 23rd May, at 10.00am and 4.00pm ET. Check out the Bowie Calendar for more.
Labyrinth : Annual Masquerade : 07/25/02
The date for this year's fifth annual 'Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade' has been released. The ball will be held within the Historic Abbey at 2825 Fifth Ave, San Diego, California. The announcement tells us: "The goblins have their trumpets ready and the fey are always anxious to play. Imaginative costumes are highly recommended. Tickets will be available in advance for $20.00 each. Further details, here.

So, we thought we'd give you lucky, lucky ticket winners the chance to not only tell us about the evening, but also the chance to win a highly-collectable signed promotional 'Heathen' poster for your kindness. We'll post the best of the first reviews we receive first thing in the morning, and any we use will be rewarded with a copy of aforementioned signed poster.

Earlier today I asked David what the audience at tonight's show could expect:
"As this was a quick call, we haven't rehearsed very many songs yet, so we are going to do 'Slow Burn' and 'Afraid' from 'Heathen', 'China Girl', 'Lets Dance' and 'I'm Afraid Of Americans'. We have no idea what to wear!"
So you winners are in for a bit of a treat...Me, I'll just sit here twiddling my thumbs and watching that in-box. :-(
I don't want to be accused of influencing the outcome, but it
should be remembered when casting your vote that this is the
poster you should be voting for, as it is the better of the two.
Now. Not tomorrow. It's happening now. Not tomorrow...

Lyrics for Slow Burn by David Bowie
Here shall we live in this terrible town
Where the price for our eyes shall squeeze them tight like a fist
And the walls shall have eyes
And the doors shall have ears
But we'll dance in the dark
And they'll play with our lives
Like a Slow Burn
Leading us on and on and on
Like a Slow Burn
Turning us round and round and round
But who are we
So small in times such as these
Slow Burn
Slow Burn
Oh, these are the days
These are the strangest of all
These are the nights
These are the darkest to fall
But who knows?
Echoes in tenement halls
Who knows?
Though the years snare them all
Like a Slow Burn
Leading us on and on and on
Like a Slow Burn
Twirling us round and round and upside down
There's fear overhead
There's fear overground
Slow Burn
Slow Burn
Like a Slow Burn
Leading us on and on and on
Like a Slow Burn
Turning us round and round and round
And here are we
At the center of it all
Slow Burn
Slow Burn
Slow Burn
